Look into the light...

I don't draw anymore! YAY!

No I kind of do but I have been way too busy...Almost two months of full quota on two different shows (don't recommend this) and now I am finally getting Illustration Freelance ontop of my animation freelance and even some other odd jobs here and there...No time!

I will post again soon. A few people have emailed me to ask if I am even alive still :)

Oh and I am learning make up to switch things up a bit. I want to do special effects along with my fiance for movies and TV...

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

Congrats!

My fiance recently graduated from school as a Make Up Artist. She plans to get into the Film and TV industry doing special effects make up and hopefully prosthetics. Her work throughout the year was AMAZING. She put so much time and dedication into her art and I am so proud of her!

Below are a few pictures of her with some her beautiful work as well as an illustration I did for her as a grad gift. Its suppose to be her on the cover of Make Up Artist Magazine. I am not totally happy with the coloring though and will do that part again.

Some stuff I was working on for Cartoon Network. I have had to put this project on hold for now because of a lack of time but hope to get working on it again soon. I was down in LA about a month ago to meet with Craig McCracken and Rob Renzetti and they were two of the nicest guys I have met in the industry. Everyone down at CN were very friendly and welcoming!

THE TRICK SHOT

Change of plans! I think to keep the better half happy (and not "redo" a painting), I am going to change the pianist to a pool player. It will work on the "canvas" I have ready for this project as he is still very long and skinny...

I don't ever really post my paintings (real paintings, not digital) but I figured I would post the progress of the one Im working on now. Its part of a series of Jazz Musicians inspired by Cab Calloway that I have been working on for a few years now. This will most likely be the last painting. I actually already did a version of this painting but am not happy with the end result. I don't have a good image of it but its hanging on the wall of my condo in the very bottom picture. It was actually a gift for my fiance so its been hard to convince her to take it down and let me do another version that she can hang again. Anyways, the new one is bigger and painted on wood, not canvas.

Here is one of the many rough drawings I did for this painting.

A rough design from a project I am working on. This is an older version of the character but not too much has changed and I kind of like this one better now looking back.

I knew WALL E was going to be good but WOW! Easily the best Pixar film in my opinion, by far.

Tiny Rat?

Friday, June 06, 2008

Just wanted to see if I could "classically" animate a walk cycle using flash in less than 15 minutes...

In 12 minutes I got this...kinda stiff but oh well.

EDIT: HOLY RIGHT PIGTAIL MOVING AROUND BATMAN!!! LOL...
Thats why you never rush animation, unless of course its the crap we do for TV
and its suppose to be crappy and fast...

video

It was pretty fun, so I did a very, very quick run cycle as well...

video

Animating "Classically" in flash is actually not so bad. I had never really done it before. I guess the cintiq helps...without a cintiq, I would imagine it would be hell!

Venom...I don't read comics books or draw comic book characters but I have always thought this dude looked cool...And I had no work to do this morning!

Friday, July 13, 2007

I was hard at work this afternoon and realized that I had never drawn a dragon before...I have no idea why I thought of this but it bothered me, so I took 10 min. away from work to draw this bad boy...

CARIBREANNE...The Curse of the Jombie

This was a quick sketch I did for a comic book or film idea I would like to work with one day. The style has changed quite a bit since this drawing but the story has pretty much stayed the same...A reluctant Caribbean girl who is the "chosen one" (through her bloodline) to save the world from the curse of the Jombie (An evil Caribbean spirit), which is about to be awoken by an evil Shaman (Witchdoctor). Only problem is, the evil Shaman has no idea where to find the Curse, which has been passed down through the generations by the girls family. When her father is killed by the Shaman, the secret of the Jombies location becomes the responsibility of the girl and her birthmark (a map to the Jombies location which transforms everytime the Jombie is moved)...Anyways, lots of Voodoo, monsters, spells, twists and turns! Probably will never get done though...hahahaha...

Work in Progress...I have not had time to finish this painting I started a few weeks ago (sooooo much freelance work to do right now!!) but I wanted to post it anyways. I have had a few friends who wanted to see some updates...

Still have a bunch of work to do on the hands and face. This is going to be the first of three paintings inspired by Jazz Musicians. I have the other two sketched out but who knows when I will have time to get to them!

This is from the flash animated film Im currently working on...Just gives an idea of how it will look...

These are a few versions of a recent Illustration I did for my girlfriend (She is from Trinidad, hence the Trinidad colors and theme). It was cleaned up and colored in Flash...

Ok, here is just a little bit of the stuff (Below) Ive been working on when I get the chance ...Most of this is pre-production designs and ideas for the shorts Im working on based on my student film The Last Supper. I slightly redesigned the characters to be more "flash" friendly, as I am animating them in flash. The designs I am using in flash are the turnarounds below. I have also tried to keep the expressions and poses simple for flash...The films are a three part story which was the original story I wanted to do for my student film but would not have had the time. It will include a newer, better version of The Last Supper (its part2) and the events leading up to and after The Last Supper...No the little girl did not die in my student film...If you havent seen the film and would like to, it is about half way down the blog...Enjoy!

Expressions, poses, ect. of the little girl...

Some thumbnails and designs for the Girls room...Basically nothing but a bed, bedside table and carpet. Her cat sleeps on the carpet and her spiders sleep underneath the carpet...

The kids pets...The boys Frog which he usually always has with him. He loves to walk his frog on a leash in the park and cuddle up with him when he goes to sleep at night. And the girls cat, fish and lizard. Her cat is very scared of the boys frog...The frog chases the cat around the house constantly!

My student film ended up being about 5 min. long, but I think I probably did enough storyboards for a 10-12 min. film! Heres one of my favorite scenes that I never used, this was actually the original layout of the family too, close together...I ended up deciding that it was was to close and loved how akward the distance between the family looked at the long table I ended up using...This was the "grace" scene, which will make it into the new films I am working on now...

One of dozens of gag ideas for my student film which was never used...

Some thumbnail drawings of animation sequences and props...I think thumbnailing animation has become my favorite thing to do!

This was the very first drawing I did when designing the parents. The mother actually never changed much, but the father did quite a bit. There was not enough height difference between the two, so the father got much taller and thinner. The original idea was also that the father was always naked except for a pair of socks (where he keeps everything he needs to keep)...

These are some screen grabs from the film The Last Supper...
These are a few of my favorite pencil tests from my student film The Last Supper...

And the original animatic for the film...Things changes quite a bit...

This is a really old drawing I did, inspired by Gris Grimly...Not really my style (a little forced when I draw this way)...

This is my cat Stitch...Yes, named after Chris Sanders evil but lovable little creature...One of my favorite Disney movies is Lilo and Stitch. Love the watercolor backgrounds!

A quick sketch and coloring of an Egyptian "Princess"...Yes I know very typical looking...But I still liked it.

I did this painting a few months back for my girlfrind...Sorry about the terrible pics, I didnt bother with proper lighting or anything. Its Acrylic on canvas and about 3'x3'.
It turned out to be one of my favorite paintings Ive done in quite a while...Dont know why though...

This is some of my Classical Animation Portfolio...I recently graduated from Vancouver Film School, Classical Animation, and am currently working as a flash animator in Vancouver, B.C., on Edgar and Ellen...I am also working on my own series of three 10 min. shorts based on my student film, The Last Supper...
The Last Supper

This is my classical student film. I was reluctant to post it on my blog because I was not really happy with the end result...Mostly timing issues. I was going for a "stiffer" style of animation, hoping it would compliment the designs and feel of the film...looking back I should have kept it a bit "looser"...I love the story and characters but really was not able to get the end result I was looking for...Thats why its a "student" film I guess...Anyways here it is...

Thursday, July 13, 2006

This is my Flash student film. We had about three weeks to complete the film from storyboards to final animation...while learning Flash...

A few of my fav designs I came up with in pre-production of my film The Last Supper for the little girl and her cat...I have recently made a few changes to her final design to make her a bit more "flash" friendly, as I am using her and her strange family in a series of three new shorts I am working on...

Again, Some of the many designs I came up with for the little boy from my film The Last Supper...Originally the film was actually suppose to be called The Last Suffer...

More designs for The Last Supper...I kinda wish I had never excluded the monsters from the final film...I actually thumbnailed or boarded dozens of different gags for the film which I never used, some of which include monsters...Hopefully I can use some of them one day!

Fish designs for my flash film, Finding Snails. I love fish and loved working on this film...I have several fish tanks at home including a puffer fish (who inspired me to do the film). Below is a vid of my Puffer fish, Don Juan...

More fish designs, expressions and thumbnails...

The final designs and Flash builds for my film, Finding Snails...I love the pixar film, Finding Nemo and in no way was the opening of this film making fun of pixar...As some people have thought...

Some random dudes...including the Mr. Satan (flash build) who I am using in another very short film that I have boarded and is waiting to be animated. There is a quick test I did with him on my demo reel actually...I will try to add it to my blog soon!

Here it is...A flash test...Ran into some problems with the builds but I am keeping the animation very very simple (like the test)...

Below...One of the first things I ever animated in flash...A little rough but I still like something about it...

Another Pretty girl...Rough and all coloured up...

Turnaround of a little girl and her cat from early in the school year...hmmmmm very similar to my final film character ideas...

Poses of the little girl...

More from The Last Supper...Some layout ideas, props, ect. ect.

Im a huge Johnny Depp fan and LOVE Pirates of the Caribbean...Almost as much as my girlfriend, so I decided to design a character based on him...Wasnt very hard and I feel strange taking credit for designing this character because...well its just Captian Jack in cartoon form...Not really my own creation...but I love them...

Really old super hero designs...not my favorites but...Actually I dont know why they are on here...hmmmmmm

Some sequential stills from my flash film, Finding Snails

More from Finding Snails

Some more sequential stills from some flash animation...

Some storyboards from my favorite scene from The Last Supper...
